The Big Red Cast

Well, Annicka got her cast yesterday and is loving it! We went up to Primary's after we picked up "uncle" steef from the airport. Steve is a friend of Scott's (and the rest of the family's for that matter) that he's known since he was in high school. She can move around more and loves the color red that she chose. Daddy, Uncle Ned, Aunt Lori and her cousins Mason, Matthew and Carter have all signed it. We go in on June 9th to get the cast off and the pins taken out.

Well, this might be a pretty long entry, so don't feel obligated to read the whole thing. Yesterday Annicka was supposed to go and get her hard cast. We didn't get one on Monday because of the swelling in her elbow, it needed to go down first, otherwise a cast wouldn't really do any good, it would fit too loosely. We got to the doctor's office at noon and after more x-ray's and lots of waiting Dr. Ritchie told us that we needed to take Annie up to Primary Children's hospital so that she could get pins put in. Apparently according to him and the doctor up at Primary's this should have been done on Monday when we went to the ER the first time. I guess the doctor who looked at the x-ray's didn't realize how rotated her bone was. I don't think he was a radiologist. Anyhow, so we got home from the doctor's and ate some lunch (not Annie, because she had to go into surgery soon) then packed some clothes, just in case and we were headed up to Primary's by 2:45. We dropped Park off at my brother's place and began the waiting session at the hospital. (Thank you Maggie for watching him for so long!) We had to start in the ER, yet again, because I guess that's just how they do same day surgery for things like this at Primary's. After more waiting and more x-rays and more waiting and waiting and waiting...you get the point...Annicka was in surgery at about 8:15p. She was out by nine. The procedure was very simple, they didn't even have to open her up. They have a little x-ray machine that they turn on, put her bones in the right place and then they insert the pins through her skin. They moved us down to the Rapid Treatment Unit (for those kids around less than 24 hrs.) at about 9:30 or 10. Annicka continued to be really sleepy and groggy for a while and we thought we'd end up staying the night. She woke up at about midnight and was wide awake and complaining about the IV in her foot. After we got her to go to the bathroom the nurse said we could go, or we could stay over night, it was up to us. Annicka wasn't sleeping and I had a feeling I wouldn't be either and so we opted to just go home. We were out of the hospital by one and home by two. Needless to say we are all a little bit tired today and are just taking it easy.We took these pictures this morning while we let the kids play outside. As you can see, Annicka is doing pretty well, especially since she is chalk full of Lortab and Ibuprofen.

Next week we go back to get a hard cast, after the swelling has gone down. That'll be on for two or three weeks and then they'll take that off and the pins out. She'll have one other follow-up appointment a few weeks later and then it's back to jumping off the couch.

Update...

Well, today we went in to get Annicka's cast on...no cast and we are now going to head up to Primary Children's hospital so that she can get some surgery to get pins put in. Apparently her break has rotated. We'll let you all know how things go, we just need to get going soon.

Does this really count as Family Home Evening?

After dinner tonight we were getting ready for Family Home Evening. I was pulling together the last few things that I needed for our lesson on keeping the Sabbath day holy. Scott had pulled the cushions out of the couch to occupy and entertain the kids in the meantime. While the kiddos were jumping Annicka crawled up onto the arm of the couch so she could jump off, which she does quite often, no matter how many times I've told her not to. Scott had gone to the bathroom and I was just coming into the living room when apparently Park either bumped or pushed Annicka and she went flying off and hit her elbow against the movie case. I have never heard her scream like that before. Scott said that from the other room it sounded like Park was doing one of his play screams, just one he hadn't heard before. Annicka wouldn't calm down and anytime she moved her arm she screamed even more. So after waiting for about 20 minutes to see if she'd calm down (nothing looked or felt out of place) we decided to take her to the ER. We dropped Park off at uncle Rob and aunt Lori's house (thank you guys, again) and headed out. Annie fell asleep in the car and of course I started second guessing myself, but we decided better safe than sorry. After a couple of X-Rays it was evident that she had broken her humerus (upper arm bone) just above the elbow, all the way across. The doctor said she was really lucky that it hadn't slipped out of place, as that would have required surgery to fix. She was such a trooper at the hospital and answered all the questions she was asked and really only cried when we had to move her arm to take the X-Rays. After that they gave her some Loritab and put her arm in a split. She'll have to go the orthopedic doctor in a few days to get a real cast. She was so funny the whole way home. She just kept talking and talking, saying the most random things about the doctors and nurses and how you have fire in your arm when you break a bone. The things Loritab will do to you. Well, here is a picture of her after we got home. The Security Guard gave her a stuffed animal when we first got there and she hasn't let it go since, his name is Ripley. Can you tell she looks a little high?
So here's my question, does a trip to the ER count as FHE?

It's about time!

Annicka is finally potty trained! Hallelujah! We started last Monday. Monday and Tuesday were both very nice days. I wasn't expecting much, I just figured she could at least go outside bare bottomed for most of the day. At least to let her know what it feels like when she peed on herself. Well, that was it! She had a total of three accidents on Monday and Tuesday and she hasn't had one since! Her diapers have even been dry for the last four mornings. We are SOOOOO happy and proud of her!
And because she filled in her chart today we get to go and get this game that Annicka has been dying for. She actually filled in her chart yesterday, but since it was Sunday we couldn't go and she was extremely disappointed. So after I'm done blogging we will go!
The trampoline hole is also finished now, with the exception of the removal of the big pile of dirt in the middle. That should get taken care of sometime soon, as our neighbors need it to fill in lots of sink holes around their yard.
